WAIMEA — Anyone who thought the pace of life is slow on the Westside was not there Thursday.
The Kauai Chamber of Commerce hosted its final Business After Hours of the summer at the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital to launch a series of activities taking place in the quiet Westside town.
Close to 100 people got more familiar with the KVMH Charitable Foundation and the medical center through its tours and health stations manned by staff members.
“This is my first time serving on the KVMH Foundation board, and I think this is the first time a nonprofit is hosting a Business After Hours,” said Jill Faye Papworth. “All of this is possible because our generous Westside eateries donate a lot of the food we have here.”
Under the canopy of string music provided by Alii Strings, patrons gobbled up the sliced Roast Beef with a Pulehu Sauce and a nice to-go box containing Pistacio Nut Crusted Salmon Salad with chopsticks for eating on the run.
The Port Allen Grille brought over special Calamari appetizers and L&L Drive-Inn in Waimea town came up with Homemade Noodles filled with Garden Vegetables. The Kalaheo Cafe and Coffee Shop provided fresh Caesar Salad with all the fixings and Steve Davis and Melissa Gregory were serving up a special Kauai Coffee Iced Mocha to help with the Westside heat, made humid by an earlier passing showerband.
The coffee drink was perfect to wash down the malasada offering by Gina Duarte of Gina’s at Yumi’s who got help from mom Chantel in serving up the tasty treats coated with either sugar or cinnamon.
“The menu is still pretty much the same,” Gina said. “But Gina is there, so we said Gina’s in the house at Yumi’s and came up with the new name. Gina’s here, and we still have Yumi’s, so now it’s Gina’s at Yumi’s.”
