Some of you may have heard our well-known and respected local DJ, Ron Wiley, talk about Training with Jane. What you might not know is that I’m the Jane!
Ron started training for the Kauai Athletic Club body transformation challenge last January, and finished third overall for having lost the most body fat in the six months that the contest ran.
He trains like a champion.
I had a lot of my clients in the top 20 of the contest. More recently, one of my clients did very well in an international contest, again showing great results in weight loss and regaining health and vitality.
Kathy Peters, also from Kauai, lost 45 percent of her body fat from January to June, and was asked last month to go to Las Vegas for a photo shoot for a company that has over 300,000 associates. We thought that was pretty wonderful. She is featured in the company’s “Look Book” of before-and-after success stories.
So how do you lose weight, get in shape and keep it off for life? Clearly, you need to have the firm intention that that is what you want. If you are not committed to the goal then your results will reflect that.
This pre-contemplative time is where many people find themselves. They would like to be in shape but they don’t put forth any real effort and not much happens. Once people make up their mind to get in shape and stay there, then often they are bewildered by all the choices in workout plans, food plans and lifestyle options.
I know it can be confusing. The research in exercise and nutrition is moving so fast that many times it seems as though one week the experts say that something is good for you, and the next they say it is not. Who do you believe?
Because I’ve been a trainer and a nutritional adviser for many decades, and have kept myself well informed of all the latest research and newest trends, it is easier for me to sift through the mass of information and come out the other side with valid facts. The basics still apply.
Yes, there is new information that helps us refine movement and exercise. And yes there is an astounding new amount of nutritional information that helps us avoid nutritional pitfalls and feed ourselves healthily. But at the end of the day your arm only moves in a rotation, a flexion, an extension, and abduction and adduction, and no new discovery is going to change that.
Your body needs quality water, vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates and some unsaturated fats, and nothing will alter that either. The fact is our bodies are the result of millions of years of adapting to the environment and coping with whatever environmental stressors it has come up against. The last hundred years or so have seen unprecedented environmental changes and our bodies cannot adapt that quickly to so many impactful changes without thoughtful assistance.
My champion clients got the results that they achieved by following basic exercise routines that burned fat and built quality lean muscle mass, while helping them gain more flexibility, endurance and balance. Those are the basics. They fed themselves quality food that was selected precisely to optimize their performance, their fat burning workouts and their recovery. Simple. If you work with someone who knows, the rest is easy.
