LIHUE — Nearly 20 volunteers took time out of their weekend to attend the free Red Cross disaster training program at the Kauai Veterans Center.
Keri Russell, the Kauai county director of the American Red Cross, said training started Friday and ran through Saturday.
“This training is very important as we are well into hurricane season, and this is the last training for 2013,” Russell said. “The Kauai Veterans Center is now one of the Red Cross private shelters on Kauai and they have been generous enough to let us hold a training session.” Hurricane season in Hawaii runs through the end of November, although this does not mean a hurricane will not take place after November.
Earlier, the Kauai chapter of the American Red Cross held a recruiting drive for disaster service volunteers.
The first step for all new disaster volunteers is to take the series of basic disaster classes which includes disaster services: an overview, shelter fundamentals, disaster assessment basics, and an orientation to disaster action team.
Russell said in addition to the space provided by the Veterans Center, the two instructors are Red Cross volunteers from Honolulu, Jennifer Walter and Barbara Dove, who took time out to travel to Kauai and lead the two-day training.
