KAPAA — Students at the St. Catherine School in Kapaa combined the celebration of Thanksgiving with the Feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria Wednesday.
“The Feast of St. Catherine, the church and school’s patron saint, came close to Thanksgiving this year, so we combined the celebration,” said Carmen Nakasone, the St. Catherine Church secretary.
During the Feast of St. Catherine, students get involved with the Mass and liturgy. They were joined by parents in processing the statue of St. Catherine from Coyle Hall. Others carried flowers that were laid at the foot of the statue in the church.
Nakasone said the students presented non-perishable canned goods in lieu of money, the food being turned over to the church’s food pantry which serves about 400 people each week.
Following the mass presided by Ramelo Somera, parents of eighth-graders planned a field day featuring activities. The celebration closed with a luncheon.
Earlier in the month, St. Catherine students worked with the staff of the Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital in creating decorations for the hospital’s Thanksgiving luncheon.
“We could not do all of this by ourselves,” said Josie Pablo, recreation director at Mahelona Hospital. “The St. Catherine School kids did a lot of the decorating for the event where we have so many families scheduled to join us.”
