PUHI — There was rain everywhere and a flash flood warning was in effect.
But the people came.
Crowds arrived armed with jackets, umbrellas and whatever rain gear they could muster, consuming more than 1,800 meals in four hours Sunday at Kauai Community College.
“We truly appreciate the support we receive from the community. We truly are blessed,” said Helen Cox, KCC chancellor.
The event was a fundraiser for the culinary program, but estimates on the amount raised weren’t available.
Wading through mud between the raindrops, diners enjoyed the menu prepared by American Culinary Federation chefs working alongside students from the college’s culinary arts program.
“One day, I would like to be working at a resort,” said Kuu Breen of Waimea who said she woke at 3 a.m. in order to be at the campus by 5 a.m., ahead of the 7 a.m. opening.
The breakfast also showcased student scholarships from organizations including the host ACF, the Culinary Institute of the Pacific, the Watase family and the Goundring family.
Leslie Agno, Darrick Baker, Maethelle Battulayan, Kuuleinani Breen, Engelica Desamparado, Jason Ebesu, Julie Henline, Jameson Macadamia, Loree Rapozo, Mark Salud, Robert Shibukawa, Vincent Simon, Ryan Taniguchi, and Evan Zamora-Balila-Schrader were allowed respite from their duties to receive the scholarships from the presenting organizations.
