A Kekaha man was sentenced to felony probation and a jail term for second-degree sexual assault of a minor. Jayme-Jeremy Locquiao Suniga, 19, was sentenced to five years felony probation and 15 months jail with credit for time served on Thursday. The probation will be with HOPE (Hawaii’s Opportunity Probation with Enforcement), a program that offers closer supervision for high-risk offenders.
Suniga was arraigned on Sept. 10, 2013. He was charged with 12 counts of first-degree sexual assault. The case came to district court after Suniga waived his right to a preliminary hearing while held on $240,000 bail. He changed his plea to no contest on Oct. 17, 2013.
County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Arin asked for the maximum 18-month jail term with felony probation. She said this would ensure that any lack of compliance could result in a revocation and the full prison term.
The court granted Arin’s request that Suniga pay $765 in restitution for counseling services to the victim. The 15-month jail term will allow three months for sanctions under probation.
