LIHUE — The Kauai High School girls air rifle team stayed just ahead of the Waimea squad, ending with a 1206-1137 win to force a shootout with the Menehune girls for the Kauai Interscholastic Federation title Wednesday.
On the boys’ range, Hikari Oberman fired off an amazing 269 (97 prone, 79 standing, 93 kneeling) to lead the Kauai boys to a 1247-1112 win over the Menehune boys at the Kauai High School range.
The win gives the Kauai High School boys the KIF title for 2014-2015 and eligibility to send a team to the Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawaii High School Athletic Association air riflers state championships Oct. 28 at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Oahu.
Oberman, firing off just three points from a perfect score in the prone, and seven points from perfect in the kneeling positions, got help from Ryker Amimoto (89-74-84-247), Kaimi Texeira (91-77-79-247), Alec Greer (92-73-79-244) and Colby Ihara-Takase (88-70-82-240).
Other Red Raider marksmen on the line included Bryson Carbonel (79-43-74-196), Darian Gerardo (87-47-81-215) and Ryan Valhuerdi (92-46-72-210).
Ryan Lomongo (85-64-821-230) led the Menehune boys followed by Keone Caberto (82-71-73-226), Sean Dela Cruz (77-66-79-222), Devon Hartsell (84-70-67-221), and John Anthony Prado (78-62-73-213).
Other Menehune boys on the line included Dennison Mopas (49-42-48-139), Christian Fostones (78-60-54-192), and Andrew Evens (68-43-64-175).
Competition was tighter on the girls’ range as Kauai leader Brooke Hornos (92-78-80-250) and Waimea leader Kayla Ishida (89-72-76-237) stayed close to each other, literally in adjoining stalls, but Hornos managing to outscore Ishida in all three positions.
Hornos got help in the victory from Jamie McDermott (88-70-86-244), Joelle Patricio (90-71-81-242), Emma Leary (78-72-88-238) and Krystle Pascua (85-63-84-232).
Other Red Raider ladies on the line included Kailee Arakaki (81-68-79-228), Angel Domingo (90-53-87-230) and Kaori Kaya (79-56-81-216).
Following Ishida on the Waimea line, Janine Prado (85-72-78-235) trailed the pace by two points followed by Melia Takakusagi (90-62-74-226), Quiana Duarte (87-54-79-220), and Tiffany Minia (85-62-72-219).
Other Menehune ladies on the line included Christina McLaughlin (85-55-59-199), Robyn Acob (78-57-65-200) and Chelsea Samatra (88-45-76-209).
