A boogie boarder was rescued at Pilaa Beach on Wednesday thanks to a call from an alert bystander.
The 911 call to Kauai Police Dispatch reportedly came from a female beach visitor, who reported seeing a person being pulled out by the current on the Kilauea side of the main channel also known as Rock Quarry.
Kauai Ocean Safety personnel responded about 12:30 p.m. and made a visual search outside the breakers. They reported not seeing anyone because of the large surf, so county Jet Ski 1 went into the channel to check out a possible sighting.
As County Air 1 and Rescue 3 also responded, Jet Ski 1 was directed by land to an area right of the channel, where a subject was spotted on a boogie board, above water. Jet Ski 1 made contact with a young man and towed him to shore.
According to responders on the radio, the male subject reported he was on the board and got pulled out by the current. He said he never took in any water and left the scene about 1 p.m. Kauai County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said no injuries were reported during the incident.
