LIHUE — Tina Albao, the Boys & Girls Club Hawaii business manager, said the club is growing and even has a wait list.
About 160 students attend the Lihue program on a daily basis.
“We have about 300 students active in the Boys & Girls Club across the island,” Albao said. “We’re definitely growing.”
Patrick Ono, Matson Kauai district manager, stopped off with a grant for $750 to the Boys & Girls Club Monday to help the blossoming nonprofit.
“We’ll probably use the money for the B&G Club Youth of the Year program,” Albao said.
Ono said Matson was glad to be able to help the community.
“Whether it’s local business, or supporting the island’s youth, Matson is glad to be able to participate,” Ono said.
Albao said the Boys & Girls Club fundraising breakfast is scheduled 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 28 at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort.
It also serves as the platform for announcing this year’s Youth of the Year, who will represent Kauai at the state competition.
The Youth of the Year, started in 1947, has been the Boys & Girls Club’s premier recognition program.
“Sponsorships, like the one from Matson, help the program,” Albao said. “There are no little contributions — every bit helps and adds to the big picture.”
