LIHUE — When it pops up, your ideas should pop up, too.
The Plan Kauai Pop-up Week is running through Friday, giving residents a chance to tell county planners what they’d like to see around the island.
“This is very interesting to see what people have to say about the General Plan Update,” said Kelly Gooding, a charter Citizens Advisory Committee member, Saturday during the pop-up tent’s appearance at the Kauai Community Market at Kauai Community College.
Launched on May 1, the pop-up tent allows Kauai residents an opportunity to provide input to the Kauai County General Plan, or Kauai Kakou for short.
The last Kauai General Plan Update was completed in 2000 and there have been many changes since that time. The Kauai General Plan Update addresses these changes and how the policy-makers are guided in growing Kauai responsibly.
The traveling display pulls up in different spots around Kauai and lets people write down and share what they’d like to see improved in areas like growth management land use, housing, town character, infrastructure and just about everything else under the sun.
“People are welcome to look over the basic update information and submit their contributions, have a photo taken at the tent and Instagram-ed,” said Ruby Pap, who works in the planning department.
The General Plan Update launches in May with a series of six community events throughout the island where information on the General Plan update process, what to expect, and meeting the project team will be presented.
Keiki in elementary school are also invited to participate in the update process by participating in the “I Love My Community Because…” art contest hosted by the County of Kauai Planning Department in partnership with the Department of Education. The contest launched on April 1 and continues through May 22.
w Following the pop up tent campaign, residents are invited to any of the six community meetings planning starting May 14 at the Waimea Neighborhood Center from 5 to 7 p.m.
w On May 15, the meeting will be at the Koloa Neighborhood Center from 5 to 7 p.m., on May 16, the meeting will be at the Lihue Civic Center Planning Commission Room from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
w Kapaa Neighborhood Center is the site of the meeting May 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on May 22, the meeting is at the Hanapepe Neighborhood Center from 5 to 7 p.m.
w The final community meeting will be on May 23 at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
