NAWILIWILI — The 20 mph north-northeast winds was ideal for Trinity, an F-28 trimaran, Thursday at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
The winds fueled the trimaran to the front of the eight-boat fleet as the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Carmen Miranda Memorial Rum Race Series Race No. 5 took off under cloudy skies which broke under the winds, revealing golden sunlight over the 6.03-mile, 3-leg race course.
Following a traffic-congested start, the seven monohulls and Trinity, the sole multi-hull, jockeyed for position heading to the Ninini Point turnaround. The congestion pretty much thinned out as the fleet returned with Trinity clearly controlling the lead, followed by Bonjolea II with Bonnie Tiffany at the wheel. Fast Company, with Jim Saylor at the stick, filled in the third spot.
The order pretty much stayed the course and Trinity crossed the finish line with an elapsed sail of 59 minutes, 8 seconds, nearly two minutes ahead of Bonjolea II (1:01:18).
The fast finish, however, could not overcome the PHRF correction factor as Fast Company, crossing third on a 1:03:05 elapsed sail, corrected to 1:03:56 PHRF for the win, two seconds ahead of Bonjolea II (1:05:19 PHRF) and four seconds ahead of Trinity (1:07:19 PHRF).
OZone, after topping the Miranda Race No. 3, slipped into fourth place on a 1:07:40 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:07:46 PHRF.
She was followed by Weatherly (1:1042 elapsed, 1:10:49 PHRF), Speedy (1:14:14 elapsed, 1:14:21 PHRF), and Coyote (1:20:05 elapsed, 1:15:00 PHRF). Coyote also corrected to 1:02:56 Club for top honors in that class.
Rebel, a Wells 27, rounded out the fleet on a 1:38:07 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:20:44 PHRF.
The public is invited to view the final race of the Carmen Miranda Memorial Rum Race Series on Thursday. The first flags will fly at 5 p.m. at the Nawiliwili Harbor, jetty wall area.
