The top six boys and girls golfers from the past season were named this year’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation all stars.
Of the 12 all stars, nine are from Kauai High School — five boys and four girls.
“Most of the credit goes to the kids and their work ethic and dedication,” said Kauai golf coach Alton Amimoto. “We had a really good bunch that were dedicated to improving their scores.”
The top four scores off all the golfers from the six season tournaments were averaged. Then those were averaged with their scores from the state qualifying rounds. The six boys and girls with the lowest averages were selected as all stars.
Among the boys are seniors Jamie Amimoto from Kauai and Bryden Salvador from Kapaa.
“It means a lot. It means all the hard work I put in amounted to something,” Jamie Amimoto said about being an all star.
The soon-to-be Red Raider alumnus said he will continue playing golf at Marymount California University. He said he’s already visited the school and met the team.
“They’re a fun bunch of guys. I made my first hole in one playing with them,” he said. “The coach was very excited.”
Salvador will play golf for the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
“It’s being part of the top golfers in the KIF and playing consistent throughout the season,” he said about being an all star. “It’s meaningful, especially being a senior.”
Among the girls is Kapaa senior Naea Oda. She’s played for Kapaa since she was a freshman and said she’s an all star because her parents and coaches pushed her to be the best she can be.
“I enjoy the people most of all,” she said. “I’ve become really close to them. They’re like family to me.”
Also among the girls is Waimea junior Samantha Nichols, the only Menehune named an all star.
She said she missed two tournaments this year — one because she was sick and another because she took part in a competition in California.
“You go through all these ups and downs, and you try to find a way to persevere and make the best of it,” Nichols said. “What you put in practice is what you get out of it. It’s not about how many hours you practice, but what you put into those hours.”
