HANAPEPE — The Kauai Gateball Club hosted the annual Invitational/Goodwill Tournament on Friday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Seven teams from Kauai, Oahu and Maui, comprising about 35 players, participated in this year’s two-day event.
“Everything is going smoothly. Everybody is dealing with the heat, but thankfully the wind picked up,” said Kauai club president Ron Aceret. “The neighbor island, and the people from Japan, they’re enjoying themselves.”
Though similar to croquet, gateball is a team game. The object of gateball is to score more points than the opposing team within the 30-minute time limit. Points are acquired by hitting the ball through numbered gates in order or getting the ball to hit the goal pole in the center of the field.
This year marks 30 years since gateball was introduced to Kauai. It was introduced in Honolulu three years prior to it being established on Kauai. The game was invented in Japan during the 1940s.
The double-elimination tournament continues at 9 a.m. today at Hanapepe Stadium.
“We’re hoping for the best again,” Aceret said.
