POIPU — The RumFire Poipu Beach has been searching for the island’s top mai tai created by professionals.
Since May 15, professionals have been meeting at the Poipu hotspot for oceanfront dining on Friday nights to create their mai tai, competing with other professionals for the signature rum drink.
In partnership with Young’s Market Company and the Koloa Rum Co., the winner, who will be named on July 12, will be awarded an oceanfront suite for two nights at the Sheraton Kauai Resort, a $100 dining credit at RumFire Poipu Beach, and a year’s worth of bragging rights.
The winning mai tai will be featured on RumFire’s cocktail menu and the Sheraton Kauai’s annual RumFest at RumFire Poipu Beach on Aug. 14 in celebration of National Rum Day.
RumFire Poipu Beach patrons vote for their favorite mai tai between 5:30 and 9 p.m. Fridays.
“This is getting down to the line,” said June Cappiello, marketing director for the Sheraton Kauai. “This Friday and next Friday are the semifinals with the final round and winner taking place July 12 at the RumFire Poipu Beach.”
Richie Ogata of Bamboo Grill & Sushi, Nilo Badua of Kalapaki Joe’s, Joshua James of the St. Regis Princeville, Canaan Undarian of Tiki Iniki, Gabrielle Nelson of Tortilla Republic, Mindy Faulkner of The Dolphin Poipu, Logan Miles of The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas, Karl Ellmann of Tortilla Republic, Alika Mayor of Duke’s Canoe Club, and Benjamin Keane of Keoki’s Paradise have been making their respective versions of mai tai for the RumFire Poipu Beach voters.
