LIHUE — Two tropical depressions south of the islands pose no threat to the state, but the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ela will bring muggy weather and showers over the weekend, meteorologists said Friday.
As of Friday, Tropical Depression One-c was 1,095 miles southwest of Kauai, while Tropical Depression Two-c was 735 miles south-southeast of the island. Tropical depressions have winds under 39 mph.
“They’re both far away and moving to the west, so there’s not going to be a direct impact over the islands from either of those two systems,” said Pete Donaldson, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration meteorologist.
Donaldson said tropical systems in the central Pacific move generally east to west.
“If we have systems that are off to the west of us or directly south of us, they usually don’t affect the islands,” he said.
Donaldson said, however, the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ela will impact the weather.
“What’s left of Ela will go over the islands over the weekend and will give us some locally heavy showers,” he said.
Ela is currently a trough, an elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure.
“A trough in our area is a system that’ll have southeast winds on the east side and northeast winds on the west side of it,” Donaldson said.
A swell from Ela will continue to bring 6 to 8 feet surf along east-facing shores through the weekend.
A high surf advisory remains in effect through 6 a.m. Sunday.
