POIPU — Dakota Cohen, 14, is quite accomplished.
She’s sung with musical notables such as Jackson Brown, Richie Samboraand Tommy Lee, and appeared on the Russell Brand Show.
Wednesday, she wore a haku lei created by lei maker and author Elvrine Chow as she took the stage next to Chow and belted out some numbers, including an encore, “Hele On to Kauai.”
The presentation took the place of the weekly Chef’s Demonstration at the Kauai Culinary Market at The Shops at Kukuiula and didn’t disappoint as Chow unveiled her new book, “Heavenly Hakus Kauai.”
“It’s so new I haven’t even had an opportunity to figure out where it will be sold,” Chow said.
Ada Koene of Poipu, whose photography illustrates the book, said the reason for publishing it was so people could have a better idea of what a haku lei is, and what kind of materials could be used in creating one.
The book took two years to create, Chow said.
“It was quite an adventure, having Ada follow me around and photographing the different lei and the people who wear them,” she said.
The $20 Heavenly Hakus Kauai will be available wherever Chow appears, including the Kauai Culinary Market, the Kauai Community Market at the Kauai Community College on Saturdays.
