ELEELE — Justin Halog, an Unchartered Waters sports camp leader, loves his summer job.
Halog, who was born and raised in Eleele, was joined by Kiana Pigao, another Eleele native, in leading the Eleele sports camp which opened this week to about two dozen youth between 6 to 10 years old at the Eleele Park.
“This is a lot of fun,” Halog said. “I’ve been able to travel all over, including Thailand, to lead these camps.”
Camp stops included Hilo, Kona, Maui, and Oklahoma, to name a recent few. A student at Eastern University, a Christian University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, majoring in youth ministry and a minor in biblical studies, Halog couldn’t think of a better way to spend his vacation.
“I just love my summer job,” he said.
Verna Schoffstall, camp coordinator, said Halog has been a sports camp leader for about five, or six years.
“This is the first year we’re hosting a sports camp in Eleele,” Schoffstall said. “We are thrilled there are so many young people who come out to participate in this weeklong event.”
The sports camp, led by the Eleele Baptist Church, offers ministry-based instruction in basketball, flag football, soccer, and cheerleading with many of the drills adapted to produce awareness in life lessons.
The Lihue camp meets from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. through Friday and Schoffstall said kids are still welcome to join the fun, simply by dropping in. Registration is $35 per camper and includes a shirt and snacks. Scholarships are available. The Kapaa camp will run from 3 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Pigao, Miss Kauai Filipina 2014, is leading the cheerleading camp for nearly a dozen young ladies.
