LIHUE — The goal is to get as much support as possible.
That means getting the word out that the North Shore Relay for Life event is in Kilauea Aug. 21-22 — a relatively new location for the 12-hour fundraiser that previously paraded around Hanalei.
“Just to come and support and have fun,” said Sharon Saronitman, Relay For Life volunteer on the reason people should attend. “It’s a great community event for the whole island.”
But one aimed at benefiting a serious cause.
Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
“Cancer has pretty much touched the lives of every single person,” she said.
Locally, ACS plays a huge role with cancer research and one of its contributions is funding travel for those who have to leave island to undergo treatment.

The fundraiser begins at 5 p.m. and the opening ceremony begins at 6.
An hour later, the luminaries ceremony will light up the track at Kilauea Christian Academy around which survivors, supporters, and those battling the disease will walk lap after lap.
Group Therapy, A Joyful Noise Taiko Drum and others will keep participants and volunteers entertained as they walk until 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22.
The theme is Totally 80s, so come dressed in an outfit fitting the whacky decade.
No donation is too big or small, and people are encouraged to swing by. Participants and volunteers are still sought, too.
“We want to build the North Shore,” Saronitman said. “Everyone should come and support whether they are registered or not.”
