LIHUE — Recycle Monday is kicking off next week at Kalaheo Elementary School as a new way to increase eco awareness and promote recycling.
“We’re telling families to bring in their HI-5s from home and place it in the bins at the school,” said Malie Smith, the Kalaheo Elementary parent in charge of recycling for the parent school teacher association. “The first day we’re doing it is Monday, so we’re calling it Recycle Monday.”
Students and their families are welcome to bring their HI-5 recyclables to any of the six recycle bins at the school for the rest of the year, Smith said.
“We’re going to track how much each student is donating,” Smith said. “Then we’re going to do a prize drawing every quarter, so for this first quarter the prize will be a microscope set.”
At the end of the school year, the student with the most recyclables will be featured in a story about the result of the program in The Garden Island newspaper.
Smith said Kalaheo Elementary has had a recycling program in the past, but over the last few years, it’s dwindled. Her hope is to bring the program back to life.
“We’re trying to get it started up again this year, and we had a great response from the recycling community to help the school,” Smith said. “We have a collection bin and they collect the HI-5 cans for us for free.”
