PUHI — Carolyn Price, top finisher for the girls and Island School, said practice focused on team for Saturday’s Kauai Interscholastic Federation cross country championships at the Island School course.
“But it didn’t quite come out the way we wanted,” Price said. “Kapaa girls won. But it was a beautiful course, and the sun came out, so it was a great run. I’m not disappointed at all.”
Price broke through at 20 minutes, 50.12 seconds, on target for her personal goal of hitting under 21 seconds.
“Historically, this has been a slow course,” Price said. “This was a great run.”
Despite finishing first for Island School, the KIF title went to the Kapaa High School women who finished with its top five women finishing in the top 10. The pace was set by Victoria Hennessy who crossed third overall on a 21:55.35 run.
Kapaa girls posted 34 points followed by Island School at 39 points, Kauai High School at 51 points and Waimea High School with 117 points.
On the boys’ course, Kauai High School closed its season undefeated, set by the pace of sophomore Dutch Fairbanks who crossed the three-mile course in the rain at 17:41.23.
“This was a tiring race,” Fairbanks said. “The rain started coming down and I was nervous about slipping on the course. I was hoping to finish under 18 minutes.”
The Kauai boys dominated the boys’ race, finishing with 26 points when its first six runners finished in the top 12 in the field. Kapaa High School, led by the dogged persistence of Braden Andrews challenging Fairbanks throughout the three miles, finished with 43 points followed by Waimea High School at 78 points and Island School at 96 points.
