LIHUE — The Kanuikapono Public Charter School is ready for the arrival of Girl Scout cookies.
“I’m picking up the cookies for Sandra Naihe, the teacher for the Girl Scout Brownies after-school program,” Sarah Schoenfeld-Nakamoto said. “I thought it was just a couple of boxes — not cases! It’s no wonder everyone at the school is so excited.”
The Girl Scout cookies arrived on Kauai Thursday with the help of Royal Hawaiian Movers.
Shereen Ho‘opi‘i, Girl Scout membership and program service coordinator on Kauai, said there were 3,189 cases, or 38,268 boxes of cookies delivered to four different distribution sites for pickup by the Scouts and their leaders.
The total is up from the 2,322 cases, or 27,864 boxes of cookies sold during 2015.
“Our order for this year is 1,656 boxes,” said Teresa Caires, leader for Troop 823. “That is a little less than what we did last year. Last year, we shot big. This year, our goal is to sell all of the cookies.”
Kyla Koerte, a Girl Scout with Troop 823, said members will be at Kukui Grove Shopping Center as early as this weekend with cookies for sale.
“It’s not that hard to sell,” Koerte said. “The cookies come out only once a year so people are waiting for them. We’ll be at sites on Friday afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays all the way until the last weekend of March, or until the cookies run out.”
Jayda Wakilina, another Troop 823 Scout, was glad the Toffee-Tastics and Rah-Rah Raisins are back.
“The little toffee pieces in Toffee-Tastics taste really good,” Wakilina said. “I don’t think they have any new flavors, but I’m glad we still have the Toffee- Tastics and Rah-Rah Raisins.”
There are eight different flavors to choose from, including Samoas, Thin Mints, Trefoils, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles, Tagalongs, Rah-Rah Raisins and Toffee-Tastics.
The program is made possible through the Aloha Angels program. Brownies are able to participate because a grant from the Zonta Club takes care of their registration.
