Jack Machorek, a Kauai High School sophomore, led the Kauai Interscholastic Federation contingent of swimmers at the OC16 Hawaii High School Athletic Association Swimming and Diving State Championships which wrapped up Saturday at the Kamehameha Schools-Big Island.
Seeded third going into the tournament which opened Friday, Machorek finished the 200 freestyle event in fourth place, according to preliminary results which did not contain any final swim times. Machorek secured his No. 3 seed on a swim of 1 minute, 45.53 seconds for the event.
Right below him, Island School freshman Akira Williams got the No. 4 seed (1:46.47). He was disqualified in the finals Saturday.
Kauai High School sophomore Zachary Safford was seeded No. 8 in the 200 individual medley, but according to the unofficial preliminary reports, was not listed in the finals.
Kapaa High School’s Grace Stokes was back on the blocks this year, less than a year after her brain surgery after qualifying in the 100 freestyle event.
Stokes was seeded No. 24 on a swim of 58.50, but was disqualified early.
On the boys’ block in the 100 freestyle, Williams secured the No. 11 seed (49.27). He showed much improvement, finishing the event in fifth place.
The Kauai High School boys 400 freestyle relay team showed a No. 6 seed (3:27.16), but ended the tournament finishing eighth. This was the sole KIF relay team to advance to Saturday’s final swim.
