Public transportation on Kauai poorly operated
Today’s the big day — you’ve decided to use public transportation. You’re going to actually take the Kauai Bus.
If the county is going to subsidize every person’s trip for $7 of tax money, might as well take advantage, right? Get out your device to see the bus routes and schedule so you can plan your trip … Google “Kauai Bus”… check the website. Wait a second … where’s the route map? I mean, it should be the main thing you see, but perhaps it’s on another page.
Click on that map of Kauai — maybe it’s there. No, that’s not a link — just a low-res image of Kauai. There’s a list of PDF files that are only timetables — even these don’t show the actual route taken. How do you know where the bus stops or what route it follows or how it links up with other routes?
But the larger question looms. Who did this? How can our County Council want to increase our taxes to expand the Kauai Bus when they can’t even put up a comprehensive route map? That’s not a budget issue; that’s not a manpower issue; that’s an intelligence issue. That shows how poorly the system is run and managed. Many public transportation systems use sophisticated interactive web pages, but on Kauai, our system lacks even the absolute most basic component — an online route map.
Here’s an idea — rather than tax us more for public transportation, make it so people can see where the bus goes.
