LIHUE — Seventeen girls from the Kauai Interscholastic Federation member schools and seven boys made 2016 state qualifying consideration times entering the KIF track and field championships Friday starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
Leading the pack following Thursday’s KIF trials, where six finalists were selected based on finishes, the girls 100 meter hurdles has the largest number of consideration times — five of the six finalists qualify for consideration.
Monique Joy Lorenzo of Waimea topped the list, stopping the clocks at 17.49 against the state consideration 18.04 time. She was tracked by Kapaa’s Brianna Binder (17.54), Waimea’s Leann Lopez (17.84), Kauai’s Anaiah Christensen (18.03) and Bronwyn Kay (18.03).
Kauai’s Asianna Nelson, missing the cut in the 110 meter hurdles, secured a consideration run in the 300 meter hurdles with her first-place run of 49.44.
Christensen also makes the state consideration in the girls high jump (4-10), tied with Kapaa’s Heather Faretta (4.10), and the girls triple jump where her leap of 33-00.50 surpasses the consideration 31-11.50 mark, and is a foot longer than Waimea’s Brandee Burton (32-00.00).
Faretta also hold a consideration time in the girls 400 meter dash where she stopped the clock at 1:03.83.
Kauai’s Kaena Kaohelauli‘i finished with consideration standards in the 100 meter dash (13.03) and the long jump with a leap of 16-01.50.
“It was alright,” Kaohelauli‘i said following the event. “I had a goal of trying to reach 12.6 (the state’s auto time standard). My best time in the event is 13.00.”
Kapaa’s Paea Tafea holds a pair of consideration standards: the girls shot put (33-06.50) and the discus throw (101-02.50).
The girls 4×100 relay teams finished with two consideration runs. Waimea’s squad of Jacelyn Ragragola-Palacio, Jessica Lopez, Leann Lopez and Monique Joy Lorenzo took top honors on a 54.39 run after overtaking the Kauai A team of Kailee Arakaki, Torrie Hasegawa, Sierra Fernandez and Monique Tomacder (54.41).
On the boys’ track, Island School’s Josh Miller finished with a consideration run in the boys 800 meter with a 2:05.64.
The only other running events with consideration times comes on the 4×100 meter relays where the Kauai A team of Joseph Cumlat, Maddison Leanio, Bryson Yoro and Kastin Medford edged out the Kapaa A team of Rafael Roslin, Edward Bernarbe, Forest Middleton and Jai Alapai with a 46.10 run over Kapaa’s 46.77.
Kauai’s Medford also topped the boys high jump on a 5-10.00 leap, getting past the consideration jump by Mark Tabalbag (5-08.00).
Kapaa’s Jonah Stokes topped the boys long jump on a 19-09.50 leap for a consideration mark, and Rafael Roslin’s 39-06.25 leap in the triple jump also surpassed the consideration standard.
There is an admission fee for the KIF Track and Field Championships.
