POIPU — Kapaa’s Kainalu Gandia got the top score, the sole golfer to finish sub-80, during the latest round of Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf contested Saturday at the Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Waimea golfers on the par 72, 7,123-yard course were further aggravated by the fact that it was their prom night. One golfer withdrew from the boys field, giving the Menehune no team scoring.
James Caudill led the Menehune boys, finishing with a 100 (48-52) followed by Braden Kobayashi (59-58-117) and Hunter Ragasa (63-64-127).
The remainder of the boys’ field saw Kauai High School team scorers fire in the 80s to collect 337 strokes and the victory over Kapaa who finished with 365.
On the girls’ side, Taryn Taguma returned to the course for Kauai High School, firing a 90 (47-43) to lead the Red Raider wahine to a team 293. Kapaa finished with 344 and Waimea tallied 358.
In addition to Taguma, Kauai scoring came from Dillyn Sakai (48-50-98), Tyra Oshiro (54-51-105) and Kiri Oshiro (51-55-106).
Samantha Coloma led the Warrior wahine scoring with a 95 (49-46) followed by Keegan Kessler (57-55-112), Paige Wesoloski (63-74-137) and Alicia Hayakawa (68-76-144).
Samantha Nichols set the pace for the Menehune ladies and the girls’ field with an 88 (45-43) followed by Daneica Muraoka (65-65-130) and Kelsey Tomimoto (75-65-140).
On the boys’ course, Kauai’s Jacob Viquelia filled in the No. 2 spot following Gandia. Viquelia picked up birdies on Nos. 6 and 8, but a double-bogey on No. 2 and a bogey on No. 3 saw the leading Red Raider cross on a 1-over 39.
Trevor Kua (39-43-82) and Keith Jose (39-43-82) set the pace for the Kauai scoring followed by Kanoa Nii (44-42-86), Christian Ganir (41-46-87) and Kamden Nii (38-50-88).
Following Gandia on the Warriors’ field, Kekoa Eisenhour finished with a 91 (45-46) followed by Micah Barretto (48-48-96) and Kaimana Zarbaugh with a 100 (47-53).
