LIHUE — The Cub Scouts from Cub Pack 168 created 4,000 floral tributes, said Kathy Langtad, the Den leader from Pack 168, Saturday.
“We started in January,” Langtad said. “First, it was the yellow center part, and we built on that.”
The handful of Cub Scouts, their parents, and Langtad started at the Immaculate Conception, placing a floral tribute at each grave. The group moved on to the Immaculate Conception cemetary in Kapaia, the Kauai Memorial Gardens, the Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park, and finishing at the county cemetary behind the Department of Water.
“Twenty years ago, we decided we would do this because the church sponsors us,” Langstad said. “We’ve been doing it ever since.”
The traditional Memorial Day decorating is the Pack’s Good Turn Project which joins the Aloha Council, Boy Scouts of America Memorial “Good Turn” Day, honoring the heroes of war throughout the weekend.
Lyle Tabata, Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 148, said the Scouts were joined by other troops, including Troop 83 sponsored by the Lihue Hongwanji Mission to set up the American flags and lei at each grave Monday.
Following the service, the Scouts removed all of the flags for storage.
