Kauai Spring Open on May 14

The Kauai Spring Open, a leg of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, will take place Saturday, May 14 at the Island School gym in Puhi.

“The Hawaii Triple Crown, it’s the only official jiu-jitsu event in the state of Hawaii,” said event director Romolo Barros. “There’s rules and regulations by the Jiu Jitsu Global Federation. This is the twelfth year for the Hawaii Triple Crown.”

The local competition a double-elimination bracketed tournament and is open to child and adult competitors in varying weight classes and expertise levels. Child competitors will also be divided by varying age groups.

“Kids from 5 years old and up compete along with their parents or their older brothers,” Barros said. “It’s open to everybody. You don’t need to be part of a school. You don’t need to be part of a team. If you train in your garage or in your house and you wanted to compete, you can compete. … It’s open to anybody as long as they understand the rules of the event, and they compete under the rules.”

Those interested in signing up can register online at www.hawaiitriplecrown.com. Deadline to register is Wednesday at midnight. Fees are $80 for adults and $60 for children. On Monday, the fees will raise to $90 for adults and $70 for children. Each additional division entered is an another $10.

T-shirts are also available for $10 each.

Weigh-ins will take place the morning of the event. Kids will weigh in starting at 8:30 a.m. and adults will weigh in beginning 11:30 a.m.

Tickets will be sold at the door the day of the event. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The Kauai Spring Open is one of seven events of the Hawaii Triple Crown — two are held on Kauai, two on Maui and three on Oahu. The next Kauai event will be held in September, but a date is to be determined, Barros said.
