LIHUE — The Kauai County Council is expected to finalize a $188-million budget for next fiscal year on Wednesday.
Included in the operating budget are salary increases for top-tier county employees, like the mayor, prosecuting attorney, chief of police and fire chief. A total of 23 people will see an increase in pay, effective July 1.
Earlier this month, the council trimmed the proposed budget by $350,000.
The cuts included reducing overtime for the police and fire departments by 5 percent, cutting funding for Office of Economic Development projects and denying a funding request from the YMCA for pool repairs.
Once approved, Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. has until June 17 to take action on the budget bill.
The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Historic County Building.
