LIHUE — Unemployment is up 0.6 percent from May to June on Kauai, but is down 0.4 percent from last year, according to a report from the Hawaii State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
The unemployment rate for the state was at 3.3 percent in June, up from 3.2 percent in May.
Of the total seasonally adjusted labor force of 685,350 people statewide, 662,500 were employed while 22,850 were unemployed for the month of June.
Nationally, the unemployment rate rose 4.9 percent this month from 4.7 percent in May.
For the state, non-agriculture jobs increased by 3,600 in June over May. The leading sectors in growth included leisure and hospitality with over 2,000 jobs, professional and business services with 1,900, and the trade, transport and utility sector at over 500.
According to the report, the rise in jobs in leisure and hospitality was equally attributed to accommodation and food services and drinking places, while the job gain in professional and business services was largely concentrated in the administrative and support sub-sector.
Job losses in June include educational and health services with a loss of 100 jobs, financial activities with a 100 and construction with the biggest loss at 600 jobs.
Compared to June of last year, unemployment in the state is down 1.1 percent, resulting in a rise of 14,700 non-farm jobs.
