HANALEI — The weekend could bring with it flash flooding and high waves as the depleted Tropical Storm Howard makes its way over Kauai.
According to forecasters with the National Weather Service, the remnants of the storm are expected to reach Kauai sometime this evening.
The threat of flooding is anticipated for Sunday and Monday.
“The last remnant, that’s where all this recent rain has been coming from, that’s left us a little soaked,” said Derek Wroe, forecaster with NWS. “With the rain coming in, it’s not going to take all that much to get flooding.”
He said there is a potential for thunderstorms over the weekend as well and people should be cautious about going out into areas where rapid stream level rise will leave them trapped.
“We’ve seen cases, especially within the last year, of people going out into the valleys – particularly along the NaPali coast and getting stuck in these conditions,” Wroe said, “conditions (like) flash flooding and rapid risings.”
Wave height is expected to be right at advisory level which is 6-9 feet, this evening and possibly into late Sunday, but Wroe said the high rainfall could create murky water conditions.
Also coming out of the East Pacific is Tropical Storm Ivette, which isn’t expected to impact Kauai. Currently, it’s more than 1,500 miles away.
Wroe said if Hawaii sees any effects from TS Ivette, it’ll be more rain.
“Most likely if we see anything from that, it’ll be into the middle and end of next week,” Wroe said. “It’s forecast to weaken as it enters the Central Pacific and the chances are it would be a rainfall threat if anything (to Kauai).”
