Victoria Franks is seeking the office of Hawaii State Representative, District 16.
“Since moving to Hawaii in 1989, we have lived on the islands of Molokai, Maui, Oahu and now Kauai,” Franks said on her website. “Our three children were born and raised in Hawaii. I have worked in the visitor industry, financial sector and taught in Hawaii schools while being in full-time ministry with King’s Cathedral & Chapels for 25 years.”
Providing accurate and timely information on legislation that affects Kauai and Niihau, protecting local fishing, hunting, and farming grounds and improving education, energy and transportation are areas that she is concerned about.
“Almost everything that is affecting my campaign now stems from conversations that I have had with people when I’m out going door to door, or just talking story,” Franks said. “I try to attend every community event that I am able to. It can be summed up in the fact that few of our legislators are seen at community events, and are not out talking to the people to find out what their true concerns are.”
Franks is unopposed in the Republican primary.
She defeated Vince Flores in the Republican primary in 2014, but was defeated by incumbent Democrat Daynette “Dee” Morikawa in the general election. She will likely face Morikawa in the general election this year.
She said we need people in government who will make the right choices for Kauai and Niihau.
“Most of the people that I have talked to are concerned because they feel like decisions are being made on Oahu that do not represent their values and beliefs,” Franks said. “The recent firearms legislation penalizes our hunters. Firearms legislation only punishes law-abiding citizens. It does not affect criminals. Criminals by definition do not obey laws no matter how many you pass.”
Franks, with a theme of ‘Keep Kauai Akamai,’ said District 16 needs better representation and more accurate information.
“We are not getting accurate and timely information because legislation is being proposed and decisions are made that the people in the districts are not even made aware of,” she said. “There is proposed legislation that would take away current fishing areas and hunting areas. That legislation does not need to be passed.”
“As I stated earlier, I do my best to be in every community event that I can so that I can find out how the people of District 16 really feel,” Franks said.
Franks has been married for 27 years and with three children.
