LIHUE — Kapaa High School bowling coach Vanessa Chang said the 2016 Kauai Interscholastic Federation bowling season should be interesting.
“Last year, our girls came close,” Chang said during practice Tuesday afternoon at the Lihue Bowling Center. “The girls just missed, losing in the bowl-off. This year will be different because we lost three seniors from last year. We have three girls returning, and three new girls.”
Chang is the coach for the Kapaa team, which is made of 13 players — six girls and seven boys. Joe Young Sr. and Joanna Chang coach the Warrior boys team.
Kauai High School girls and boys claimed the KIF bowling titles in 2015, and both aim to repeat this year.
“Our goal is to go to states as a team,” said Maria Luis, a co-captain for the Kauai girls team with Geneva Dela Cruz. “We went last year, but not everyone could go.”
Christian Iloreta is the co-captain of the Kauai boys team with Rendle Mones, the combined forces numbering 13 players.
“We have a small squad this year,” said Kyrin Sasaki, the Red Raiders’ coach. “We just have to back each other. It’s too early in the season to single out any player — they need to prove themselves out on the lanes.”
Chang said she anticipates a competitive season, although she hasn’t had an opportunity to watch Waimea High School at practice.
“Our girls are pretty good,” the Kapaa coach said. “Our boys also have a chance.”
The first ball of the 2016 KIF bowling season rolls on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
