James Hatsuji Masada

James Hatsuji Masada of Hanalei, passed away at the age of 88, on Aug. 7, 2016, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Born on Feb. 4, 1928, in Lihue, he was a retired rancher with Gay and Robinson for over 30 years and a retired taro farmer.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Watari Masada; brother, Harris Masada; and sisters, Beatrice Yoshida and Evelyn Honda.

James is survived by his son, Marvin (Geary) Masada of Kilauea; daughter, Beryl Maka of Hanalei; son-in-law, Julio Inanod of Kilauea; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; hanai grandson; sisters, Margaret Kunimura of Honolulu and Jane Fujii of Lancaster, California and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at the Waioli Hui’ia Church in Hanalei. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with services following at 10:30 a.m.

Casual attire is requested and flowers are welcomed.

Corazon A. Villanueva

Corazon A. Villanueva of Eleele passed away at the age of 84, on Aug. 9, 2016, at home. Born on June 26, 1932, in the Philippines, he was a heavy equipment operator.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Cipriano and Sylvestre Villanueva; brothers, Fidelino and Washington Villanueva and sisters, Benita V. Aguinaldo and Inosencia V. Agbayani.

Corazon is survived by wife, Fe Villanueva; sons, Florante (Thelma) Villanueva of Eleele, Alex (Fely) Villanueva of Washington State, Danny (Liza) Villanueva of Washington State and Ely (Juvilee) Villanueva of North Carolina; daughter, Janet (Marty) Forbes of Maui; grandchildren, Jonathan, Donn, Grant, Adrian, Christian, Liezel, Ashley, Ian, and Andrew; sisters, Susana V. Llamas of Ilocos Norte and Consolation V. Santos of Vintar, Valencia Bukidnon and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, at the Garden Island Mortuary Chapel in Lawai. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with services at 3 to follow.

Jenichi ‘Shige’ Shigematsu

Jenichi “Shige” Shigematsu of Koloa passed away on July 18, 2016, at the Garden Island Health Care at the age of 95.

Born on April 20, 1921, in Koloa, Kauai, he was a retired supervisor with Grove Farm and McBryde Sugar Plantation.

Preceded in death by parents, Zensaku and Shika (Hara) Shigematsu; wife, Patsy M. “Higa” Shigematsu; grandson, Keili Nigel Shigematsu.

Survived by sons, Dayne and Valerie (Pablo) Shigematsu, Mitchell and Terry “Miller” Shigematsu, Ryan and Wendy “Yoshishige” Shigematsu, Cleve and Gail “Makaneole” Shigematsu, Kent and Joni “Martin” Shigematsu; daughters, Mona and Clay Yamauchi, June and Glenn Allianic; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Friends may meet with the family on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel.

Visitation at 11 a.m., service at noon p.m.

Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery, Hanapepe.

Ernest Branco

Ernest Branco, 86, passed away on July 24, 2016, at home. Born on Aug. 29, 1929, in Kealia, Kauai he was an army veteran and a retired auto-body mechanic.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Branco; son, James Branco; and daughter-in-law, Evelyn Branco.

Ernest is survived by sons, Allan Branco of Kapaa and Jeffery Branco of Anahola; daughter, Donna (Kenton) Gomes of Kapaa; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Manuel Arruda of Maui and Johnny Arruda of Kapaa; sisters, Mary Agusto of Kapaa, Rosie Pimental of Kalaheo and Dorothy Sugai of Kealia and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, at the St. Catherine’s Church in Kapaa. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. with Mass to begin at 11 a.m.

Casual attire is suggested and flowers are welcomed.

Interment will be at a later date.

Marilyn ‘Mele’ Bantolinao

Marilyn “Mele” Bantolinao of Hanamaulu passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2016, at the age of 63. She was born in Lihue, Kauai, on Dec. 28, 1952, and retired as a receptionist with Lihue Veterinary Clinic.

Preceded in death by her father, Rufino Bantolinao.

Mele is survived by her mother, Corazon Bantolinao; brother, Leroy Bantolinao; seven children, Marilyn Reis, Godfrey Perreira Jr., Renee (Roy) Gonsalves, Tina (Roy) Sakata, Liza Perreira, Aaron Perreira, Delia Dizol; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Private services were held at Immaculate Conception Church.

Kauai Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Antone Souza

Antone “Tony” Souza, 84, of Keauhou, passed away on July 26, 2016, at Life Care Center on Kona. Born Sept. 25, 1931, in Lihue, Kauai, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Ke Akua Mana Church.

He is survived by brother, Edward (Yvonne) Souza; sister, Gertrude Johnson all of Kauai; grandchildren, Vince Holloway of Wailuku, Maui, Kyson (Tiani) Lanning, Eula Ann (Kainoa) Kamanawa, Meilyn Lanning all of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Mark Anthony Auerbach

Mark Anthony Auerbach of Wailua Homesteads, Kauai, formerly of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away on Aug. 6, 2016 at the age of 83.

Born March 7, 1933, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was a retired marketing executive.

Preceded in death by parents, Henry and Florence Auerbach and brothers, Henry Jr. and Shay Auerbach.

Survived by sons, Michael (Shirley) Auerbach, Kaneohe, Hawaii, Steven (LeAnn) Auerbach, Honolulu, Hawaii, Justin Auerbach, Honolulu, Hawaii; daughter, Susan (Bill) Chamberlain, Wailua Homesteads, Kauai; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, friends.

Diana Natsuko Oyakawa

Diana Natsuko Oyakawa of Lihue, Hawaii, passed away at age of 71, on Aug. 10, 2016, in Lihue. Born on June 10, 1945, in Lihue, she was a school librarian at Elsie Wilcox Elementary School.

She is preceded in death by her father, Taketo Yokota; mother, Tsugiko Yokota and brother, Stanley Yokota.

Diana is survived by her husband, Norman Oyakawa; son, Ray (Hiroko) Oyakawa of Honolulu; brothers, Wallace (Sally) Yokota of Honolulu and Kenneth (Joyce) Yokota of Honolulu; sister, Nancy Yamamoto of Lihue and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Celebration of Diana’s Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at the Lihue Christian Church. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. with services to follow at 4.
