The Kauai Mokihana Festival continues its free cultural events tonight with a lei-making presentation at the Queen Lili‘uokalani Children’s Center in Lihue from 5 to 7 p.m.
“Lei Haku ‘Ia” will be presented by master lei maker Kaua‘iki Olores.
Acultural presentation on the different Hawaii rain names will be shared by Kumu hula Collete Leimomi Akana and her daughter Kiele Gonzalez Thursday. The duo is the authors of Hānau Ka Ua, which takes readers on a journey into Hawaiian culture, oral tradition and literature.
The lei-making demonstration tonight leads up to an event that is being brought back by popular demand.
“Na Lei Pua ‘Ole” — the flowerless lei contest — will be held at the Kauai Beach Resort at 1 p.m. Friday.
The five categories are leaves and vines, seeds and nuts, shells, feathers and recycle-reuse, said Maka Herrod, Malie Foundation executive director.
“I’m hoping to get a lot of people interested,” Herrod said.
Finishing off the week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is the hula competition at the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort.
