LIHUE — Jeyvin Ramelb of the Lihue Atlanta Falcons flag football program peeled off two touchdowns to lead Lihue to a 20-7 victory over the Hanapepe Colts Sunday during the Kauai Pop Warner Football League games at Vidinha Stadium.
“This was the final flag football game for this season,” said Teddy Arroyo, KPWFL president. “We had just two teams in the league this year — Lihue and Hanapepe — but both teams played well, thanks to the efforts of their coaches, Craig Kawakami from Lihue and Josh Santiago from Hanapepe. There are other associations who are seriously looking at establishing teams for next year after watching this year’s play. We would like to thank everyone for their support of this new program which provides participation for the younger players in the Pop Warner program.”
Ramelb opened the scorebooks early, taking the handoff from quarterback Chase Kawakami and peeling off a touchdown in the first three minutes of play. His point-after run was stymied by the Colts for the early 6-0 bulge.
The Falcons tapped paydirt for the second time when Ezekiel Lopez intercepted a Hanapepe pass and ran it back for touchdown, adding the point-after for a 14-0 lead which was answered in the final three minutes before the break.
Hanapepe quarterback Chayden Kai found Jonah Hauka on a 45-yard aerial connection for touchdown. Kai hit Blake Antonio for the point-after for the 14-7 halftime read.
Ramelb found the end zone late in the second half on a 46-yard scoot to paydirt.
Chase Kawakami’s point-after pass was plucked by Kepa Pablo who ran the ball back the other way for the 20-7 final.
Earlier in the day, Hanapepe Colts’ Nohili Ragragola peeled off touchdowns of 31 yards and 50 yards in its 12-0 win over the Koloa Redskins in a Mitey Mite division game.
Results of the remaining games will appear in a future issue of The Garden Island.
Cherie Linoz, president of the Hanapepe Colts association, said the islandwide cheer competition will be held on Oct. 23, starting at 10 a.m. at the Kauai High School gym. At stake for some of the divisions are eligibility for participation in the Pop Warner National Dance and Cheer competition which will be held in Florida in December.
