Kauai boys clinch KIF bowling title

LIHUE — Entering the lanes Thursday, Kauai High School bowling teams needed one more win to secure the Kauai Interscholastic Federation titles at Kauai Bowl.

Kauai bowler Alvin Reis finished the night with a high game of 233 to lead the Red Raider boys to its 2016 KIF boys bowling title. The Kauai boys nailed the title while shooting their highest team game of the season at 971.

Kapaa opened the night with a 767 team score, 18 pins better than Kauai (749) followed by Waimea rolling a 711. The chase triggered Kauai into action as the Red Raiders erupted for his season-best 971 in the second game, Waimea coming back with a strong 788 showing over Kapaa who settled at 660. The Raiders continued to roll strong, finishing the third game at 800 for a 2,520 showing over Waimea who pulled a 726 third game for a 2,225 total over Kapaa’s 2,158 showing in the night.

On the girls’ lanes, Carla Mae Satumba from the Waimea girls team set the pace for the night, rolling a 208 and leading Waimea to is 2,106 (736-728-642) team total, 100 pins ahead of Kauai who finished with 2,006 (659-656-691) team total. Kapaa ended the night at 1,637 (550-534-553).

Todd Ozaki, coach for the Waimea bowling teams, said despite the Kauai boys claiming the team total, the single qualifier to the Billy Tees Hawaii High School Athletic Association 2016 Bowling Championships from Waimea or Kapaa high schools is still up for grabs. The tournament will be held Nov. 3 and 4 at the Leeward Bowl on Oahu.

With two more games on tap, the KIF girls’ title is still up in the air.

“Waimea girls keep their hopes alive with this first win of the season,” Ozaki said. “They must win the remaining two matches to force a one-game playoff against Kauai High School. Kauai girls are still a win away from the KIF title.”

The next KIF bowling match takes place Thursday at the Kauai Bowl starting at 5:30 p.m.
