Kauai High School’s Dodger Middlebrook was the first Division II runner to cross the finish line Saturday during The Honolulu Marathon Hawaii Cross Country state championships held on the Big Island.
Finishing eighth overall, Middlebrook ran the course at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy at 18 minutes, 34.14 seconds, less than a minute behind top boys finisher Connor Lehl of Punahou (17:42.34).
Middlebrook was chased by Kane Casillas crossing 17th overall at 19:02.59, the second runner for team scoring.
Individualist Garret Smith of Kapaa, a consistent challenger through the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season, filled in at 67th overall on a 20:11.75 run before Kauai’s Jacob Herr, the third scoring member, stopped the clocks at 101st overall on a 20:41.60 run.
Island School’s James Pratt clocked in at 105th place (20:45.87) before Kauai’s Dustch Fairbanks clocked in at 110th place on a 20:48.75 run.
Gabriel Franklin of Kapaa crossed the line at 21:05.45 in 125th place followed by Keon Orlando (156th place, Kap., 21:30.73) and Joshua Graves (157th, IS, 21:30.14).
Keanu Brown (181st, Kap., 22:05.57), Ben Griep (191st, IS, 22:42.31), Braden Lumabao (196th, Wai., 22:53.14), John Uribe (197th, Kap., 22:59.91) crossed before Kauai’s fifth runner, Micah Matsunaga stopped the clocks in 198th place at 23:02.89.
Overall, Kauai High School boys finished third in Division II standings with 72 points followed by Kapaa High School boys filling in fifth place at 113 points. Konawaena topped the Division II teams at 38 points.
On the girls’ course, Kauai High School freshman Mia Takekuma, a consistent leader during the KIF girls races, topped the KIF finishers on a 23:02.94 run, 24th overall below the top finisher, Veronica Winham, a Division II runner who stopped the clock at 20:55.66.
Victoria Hennessy, the top Kapaa runner and constant challenge to Takekuma, clocked in 33rd overall at 23:21.19 followed by Island School’s Carolyn Price at 43rd overall on a 23:54.38 run to round out the KIF representation on the leaderboards.
Kelsea Armstrong (72nd, Kap., 24:50.57), Juliana Tampus (97th, Kap., 25:29.53), Kristin Chun (109th, Kau., 25:41.98), Jahleghcia Bagain (110th, Wai., 25:45.26), Sydney Brady (137th, Kau., 26:17.94), Kahlil Shockley (143rd, Kap., 26:25.47), Leila Nelson (145th, Kap., 26:27.20), Heather Faretta (154th, Kap., 26:33.81), Stacie Schnackenberg (184th, Kau., 27:55.88), Dillon Sakai (189th, Kau., 28:23.28), and Samantha Bostick (196th, Wai., 29:12.14) rounded out the KIF representation in the girls’ race.
The Kapaa girls finished in fifth place in Division II with 104 points followed by the Kauai girls in sixth place at 122 points. Seabury Hall, whose top runners filled the first four spots, topped the Division II team standings with 17 points.
