LIHUE — Unsettling sounds emanated from the foggy, pitch-black entrance of Kukui Grove’s Community Haunted House on Friday.
Banging, the uncertainty of every corner, and, scariest of all, the descent into the unknown was enough to send screams from the entrance to the exit of the haunted house, which opened to the public on Friday.
The clowns — some animated, others stationary, and that one that scares living daylights out of you — was Kayla Tazaki’s favorite part.
“It was still scary, but it was still very fun,” she said. “The scariest part was when they kept banging on the ending part (of the haunted house).”
Tazaki and her three friends could be heard screaming as they exited through the fog. Panting, with smiles on their faces, the group of four friends had aspirations of going through again later that night.
The strobe lights mesmerized Amber Baxter and illuminated the face paint she had on for the occasion.
“The scariest was when we first entered the dark part,” she said. “That’s when everything got pitch black and you couldn’t really see anything.”
Baby skull people in the middle of the haunted house frightened Mesha Ferreira.
“It’s pretty cool,” she said. “I screamed and now my voice hurts.”
Playing it cool was Kaeo Duncan Mundon.
“It was very chill,” he said. “Nobody was screaming that much — except the girls.”
Things were going smoothly for him until he felt something unexpected.
“The black-suited guy caught me off guard,” he said. “He touched my back from behind.”
Bridgette Orsatelli, haunted house assistant, said guests may come over every weekend in October.
“It’s scary. It’s fun. You’re coming in to get a little chill.”
Proceeds from Kauai’s Community Haunted House will benefit Kauai United way. The haunted house will run every Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. and every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Adults pay $5 to enter the spooky exhibit and children 10 and under pay $3. Keiki under six must be accompanied by an adult.
