Out of the 19 public schools on Kauai, 15 fell below the state average of the percentage of students deemed proficient, according to 2016 SBAC test scores from the state’s public schools.
The state’s proficiency average for elementary-school students is 53 percent, but the average of proficient Kauai elementary students is 43 percent.
The average proficiency of students in Kauai’s high schools is 36 percent while the state’s is 40 percent. However, Kapaa High School’s percentage of proficiency is 42 percent, at least 4 percent better than the other two public high schools, Kauai and Waimea, on the island.
Despite numerous attempts for comment, the DOE has not returned any calls from The Garden Island.
While many schools have improved their proficiency scores since last year, many of the Kauai’s public schools are still catching up to the state average.
Hanalei School is the best-performing school based on proficiency among students, polling at 63 percent, which is 10 percentage points higher than the state average and 20 percent higher than the Garden Isle’s average, while Kalaheo School saw its proficiency fall 10 percent in the past year, down from 55 percent to 45 percent.
The biggest jump in proficiency this past school year was Kauai High School. Kauai High showed a massive improvement from the 2014-2015 school year, increasing its proficiency by 16 percentage points.
