Harriet Kehaulani Kaili Rita Malapit
Harriet Kehaulani Kaili Rita Malapit age 67 lost her battle with Thyroid Gland Cancer has passed away in Kula, Maui, Hawaii, on Dec. 27, 2016, at home surrounded by her hanai (caretaker’s) family, Mama Mattie Kukahiko-Kaeo, Kulani, Pono, Kapio, No’I, Tupu, Waipa “Bozo”, Tessie, Kalae and Manoha Kaeo, and her beloved dog Pojo.
She was born on Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii, on Aug. 17, 1949, to Hannah Kahawaii Haleakala Kaili and Abraham Waikaka Kualu Kuwalu her parents later divorced. Her mother Hannah remarried to Joseph Nawahini Kaili, who adopted her and her siblings than took them to be sealed in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Laie, Oahu, Hawaii Temple.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband’s Tom Rita and William “Willie” Malapit and her brother Abraham Stanley Kaili.
Harriet is survived by daughter Roseann Cannon of Wainae, Oahu, Hawaii; brother Harrom Hookano Kaili (Haunani) of Anahola, Hawaii; sister’s, Dora Lima Daley (Kent) of Provo, Utah. Emmaline Kaili of Lihue, Hawaii; 6 grandchildren Kalani, Joseph, Melody, Tyler, Hallie, and Bryson; Nieces and nephews: Allison, Denise, Malanie, Kimo, Doranna, Karley-Joe, Kaina, Keoki, and Keawe Eaton. Aunt Luita Tachikawa; numerous grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
Having suffered brain hypoxia from nearly drowning at the age of three, she suffered from impaired cognitive function the remainder of her life. Every success with her learning disability and special needs she was independent performing her daily living skill was joy in every advance small or large. She loved and was loved.
Her loved for her family and her hanai family was deep. She was a kind, sweet soul that loved to help others with a beautiful good nature that easily inclined to have a friendly personality. Her anger comes and passes quickly, she never held a grudge. She would always greet everyone with a smile. Although she had little to offer she was willing to share, she had a big heart! She was caring, full of love and laughter. She loved cooking and eating her fish and poi, enjoyed playing volleyball, yard cleaning, playing the ukulele, singing, listening to her music CD’s and playing her bongo.
Harriet has had a talent all her life was passionate to making beautiful jewelries from nature seashells off the seashores, kukui nuts, koa seeds, red seeds, Black-Eyed Susan seed, etc., and varies types of fresh flowers and leafs in bloom that the Hawaiian Island could offer for her to make beautiful leis.
A private viewing was held on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at Borthwick-Norman’s Mortuary, Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii.
On Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, from noon to sunset, there will be a Potluck to celebrate her life with scattering of her ashes in the sea to be held at Maliko Gulch Park she’ll be reunited with her husband Willie. Friends, neighbor’s families and everyone who were touched by her sweet spirit are welcome to help celebrate. E ko mo mai.

Callie Rene Fayé Thurman
June 10, 1959 – Jan. 7, 2017
Callie Thurman, 57, passed away on Jan. 7, 2017, at her home in Kula, Maui, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Wahiawa, O’ahu, on June 10, 1959.
Callie was predeceased by her mother Barbara Cleghorn Fayé and her sister Carrie Lynn Fayé.
She is survived by her husband of 30 years Stephen Carl Thurman, sons Aaron Thurman (Jennai) and Bryan Thurman (Wahine), father Lindsay Anton “Tony” Fayé Jr. (Diane), sisters Christine Fayé, Diane Deacon Fayé (Greg) and Lindsay Catherine Fayé, 2 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held for her at the Ulupalakua Ranch Pavilion on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at 2 pm.
Ernesto Taylan
Ernesto Taylan of Brydeswood, passed away on Jan. 16, 2017, at his residence at the age of 77. Born on April 9, 1939, in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a heavy equipment operator with the McBryde Sugar Plantation.
He is preceded in death by Rodrigo Taylan; Consolacion Salvacion; Shirley T. Alviza; Catherine T. Veniegas; and Gomercindo Taylan Sr.
Ernesto is survived by his wife, Luisita Taylan; sons, Ernie (Nancy) Taylan, Efren (Emelie) Taylan, and Erwin (Tiana) Taylan, all of Brydeswood; five grandchildren: Kainalu Taylan, Kamalei Taylan, Kekai Taylan, Efren Taylan Jr., and Theo Taylan; sisters, Thelma (Abelardo) Capapan of Galveston, Texas, Norma T. Rosqueta of Lihue, Kaua’i, Melba (Romito) Buado of Houston, Texas, Warlita T. Dondonay of Galveston, Texas, and Marilou (Noemi) Bueta of Corona, LA; and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, at the Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. with Mass beginning at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be followed at the Hanapepe Public Cemetery.
Casual attire is suggested and flowers are welcomed.

Carole Sprenger Rivard
Carole Sprenger Rivard of Kapaa passed away at home on Jan. 15, 2017, at the age of 84. She was born in Massachusetts on March 13, 1932, and was a dedicated homemaker.
Carole is survived by her husband, Robert Rivard of Kapaa; three sons, Robert (Ann) Rivard of Maryland, Michael Rivard of Kapaa, William Rivard of California; one daughter, Renee (Stan) Richardson of Vermont;5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sharon Causland and Susie Williams; brother, Bill Sprenger.
Private services were held.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Rivard family with arrangements.
Helen K. Kure
Helen K. Kure of Kapa’a passed away at the age of 96 on Dec. 26, 2016, at Garden Isle Health Care. She was born on May 5, 1920, in Honolulu, Hawai’i and was a retired sales clerk.
Private services were held.
