KAPAA — Volunteers have removed more than 9,000 pounds of debris from Kauai’s beaches over the past two weekends.
The debris includes plastic, nets and propane tanks. It filled about one-third of one of two 40-foot containers waiting to be shipped to Adidas, which has partnered with Parley for the Oceans to make sportswear from plastic ocean pollution.
“These were sent to us by Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, and we are very grateful,” said Scott McCubbins of Kauai Surfrider Net Patrol.
Surfrider usually gets containers to fill once every 10 months. Several years ago it got them every other year.
“There’s more volunteers and there’s more debris coming in,” said Dr. Robert Zelkovsky of Surfrider Kauai.
Net Patrol continues to host Wednesday cleanups and larger weekend events.
