HANAPEPE — Kauai High School faces Damien Memorial High School at 8 a.m. today, and host Waimea High School is up against Kapolei High School at a time to be determined on the final day of the Waimea Baseball Invitational tournament at Hanapepe Stadium.
“(Kauai High and Waimea) reached a mutual agreement not to play each other,” said Kirk Correa, the tournament’s scorekeeper. “They’ll play each other during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season so the idea is to play other teams.”
Kauai dropped the Friday opener, 6-3, against Kapolei. Waimea came up on the short end of a 9-2 final against Damien to open the day.
“We’re improving with every game,” said Waimea coach Larry Ephan. “We’re still a young team, and the squad we have here is not complete because we have athletes coming in from other sports. The idea is to get the kids out there so we can get a feel for what they’re capable of doing. We have the remainder of the athletes coming in as soon as Sunday. We have another tournament on Oahu coming up and we’ll work toward getting the team solidified.”
The teams were hosted to a luau Friday night following the final game. Tournament play concludes with the championship game at 3:30 p.m. today.
At press time, teams that could be involved include Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama, Saint Louis, Kapaa High School or Mid-Pacific Institute. All four teams were on the field with results not being available by press time.
“We’re trying to get this tournament bigger,” said Sherri Ephan, tournament coordinator. “We’re having Kui Souza throw out the first pitch, and Ricky Waalani of Waalani Enterprise is sponsoring the entire luau for the more than 400 people involved in the tournament. That’s a lot of money, but he said he was willing to do it for the team.”
