KILAUEA — The multi-agency, multi-day search for a Maryland woman who was swept out to sea Monday was suspended Thursday.
Police have identified the woman as 22-year-old Destiny Marbury.
According to a police, Marbury entered the water at the north-end of Anini Beach, when she became distressed and called out to her friend for help.
The friend, a Kapaa man, jumped into the water to assist her, but he then ran into trouble in the high surf and strong rip current.
The 37-year-old was rescued by a Good Samaritan and firefighter.
He was treated by responding medics and released at the scene.
Marbury could not be located despite this week’s air, land and sea-based search with a team of rescuers including Kauai lifeguards, firefighters, police and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Officials are now reporting this incident as Kauai’s third drowning of 2017.
