Kauai High School’s varsity girls basketball team advanced to the fifth-place game of the Snapple Girls Basketball Championships — Division II state tournament.
The Red Raiders defeated Damien Memorial of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, 59-37, in a consolation game Friday at Farrington High School in Honolulu.
“Especially in the first half, we defended pretty well,” said Kauai varsity girls basketball Head Coach James Dingus in a phone interview Friday. “Damien has a pretty good point guard, and we were able to contain her in the first half. She got loose a little bit in the second half, but in the first half we were able to contain. And we played our style of basketball on offense. Everybody contributed.”
Kauai will play the winner of the consolation game between Moanalua of the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Seabury Hall of the Maui Interscholastic League. Results from that game from Farrington High was unavailable by press time.
The fifth place game of the Division II tournament begins 11 a.m. at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu.
“I think it’s fun to get to play in a building like that. I’m not sure how many of our girls have had an experience like that before,” Dingus said. “Being in the locker rooms, coming out of the tunnel, all of that is just pretty special and they’ve earned it. So, I really hope they have fun and enjoy the moment, and continue to play the way we’ve played.”
