KAPAA — For Adam Yund, there is ore in wood.
The Kapaa Middle School art instructor will be hosting an art exhibit at Trees Lounge in Kapaa from March 10 through April 30, titled “Ore in Wood.”
“A lot of the materials I use — wood, metal and others — are recycled from things I find,” Yund said. “It helps keep the costs down. When I built a forge at my house, I used my wife’s hair dryer.”
Wood forms the base of many of his creations.
“I grind them, carve, grind and use different techniques,” Yund said. “That brings life, like texture, to wood. I also do a lot with metal, like rebars. I grind them, pound it and work it to its final shape.”
Inspiration comes from his observations around the community.
“A lot of the things I create come from what I see out there — island imagery,” Yund said. “I like to make fun stuff. I’ve been teaching art for several years, and I find inspiration in the students. I try to give back and I see them being motivated by what I do, too.”
Yund’s offerings range in style.
One piece features several layers of painted wood topped by “Aloha” created from pieces of metal. Another is a reptilian scene featuring bright neon colors. A surfer catching a wave on a backdrop of gouged wood demonstrates his ever-growing development.
“I used hot metal heated in the forge to form the waves,” Yund said. “The surfer is enhanced using wood-burning techniques — I only recently found a wood-burning tool and am starting to learn how to use it.”
Yund owns YUND Studios.
An opening reception at Trees is scheduled for 8 p.m. to midnight March 10.
