LIHUE — The Red Raiders won on a walk-off to start the season’s second round.
Kauai High School’s varsity baseball team defeated Kapaa, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Vidinha Stadium.
Tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Kauai High (6-1 KIF, 1-0 2nd round) started with a leadoff hit by Red Raiders junior outfielder Ethan Gray.
During the following at bat, Warriors sophomore catcher Kaimi Malina threw to first base attempting to pick off Gray but his throw went past the first baseman and deep into the outfield.
Off the error throw, Gray ran the bases to home plate to score the walk-off run.
Kauai scored the game’s opening run in the first inning off an RBI single to right field by sophomore infielder Jacob Borrero.
Kapaa (3-4 KIF, 0-1 2nd round) tied the game in the sixth inning. Warriors junior infielder Kade Kupihea crossed home plate from second base off a Red Raiders error.
Kauai totaled two runs off eight hits, left eight runners on base and recorded two errors.
Borrero was 2-3 with two singles and an RBI.
The winning pitcher was junior Christian Manera, who started the game at left field and came in relief in the seventh inning. He threw 2/3 of the inning, getting the last two outs on a groundout and a flyout.
Red Raiders starting pitcher, senior Keanu Camalliri, went 6 1/3 innings and got eight strikeouts and three walks before being relieved because he reached the 110 pitch count limit.
Kapaa got one run off four hits, left 10 runners on base and also recorded two errors.
Warriors leadoff hitter, junior infielder Ekolu Rivera, was 1-3 in with a single and a walk.
The losing pitcher was freshman Nainoa Cardinez, who pitched all seven innings for the Warriors and tallied three strikeouts and three walks.
Results of the second game of Saturday’s twin bill was unavailable by press time.
Kapaa will host Waimea (1-5 KIF) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Kauai will next play Waimea for a doubleheader at Hanapepe Stadium on Saturday. The first game will start 10 a.m.
