PUHI — The Island School and Kapaa High School tennis teams closed its Kauai Interscholastic Federation tennis season with a split Saturday at the Kauai Community College tennis courts.
Kapaa’s Jake Peralta teamed with Mason Buick on the Boys First Doubles court to take a 7-5, 6-2 win over the Voyager duo of Kahea Kamalani and Manix Wolan for the Warriors’ only win on the boys’ courts where Island School claimed a 4-1 win over Kapaa.
On the girls’ courts, Island School girls Julia Randolph-Flagg paired with Lily Flynn to come back against Kapaa’s Sydney Nice and Chiara Fumagali, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 on the Girls First Doubles court.
The win was the sole victory for the Voyagers as Kapaa girls took the match, 4-1.
For the boys, Island School’s David Janshen was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Kapaa’s Makani Crowder, and Voyager Sasha Rovinsky controlled the Boys Second Singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kapaa’s Kyler Tom.
After dropping the Boys First Doubles to Kapaa, Island School rebounded for the remaining doubles matches, the Boys Second Doubles team of Dominic LaFratta and Andy Anderton defeating the Kapaa pair of Cody Anderson and Levi Eulalio, 6-1, 7-5.
The Voyagers’ boys closed out the day when the Boys Third Doubles pair of Brandon Begdoon and Patrick McKenna defeated the Warrior duo of Michael Anderson and Glenn Aguada, 7-5, 6-1.
Omar Elwir and Glenn Aguada of Kapaa got past Patrick McKenna and Kaikea Kaui, 7-5 in an Expedition match.
Kapaa ladies took the Girls Singles matches when Isabella Kotsal, playing on the Girls First Singles court defeated the Voyagers’ Aija Sclafani, 6-1, 6-2. Kapaa’s Shannon Sitzler was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Island School’s Risa Whetsel on the Girls Second Singles court.
After dropping a three-set match on the Girls First Doubles court, Kapaa girls rebounded to take the remaining two matches when Malia Seaby paired with Kylee Bush on the Girls Second Doubles court to defeat Island School’s Gabri LaFratta and Allison Summerhays, 6-2, 6-4.
Leila Nelson and Hannah Collins-Doijode of Kapaa battled Voyagers Lapis Dove and Hannah Whelan on the Girls Third Doubles court to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.
The KIF tennis players next compete at the state qualifying tournament which starts Thursday at the Hokuala tennis courts, and the Kauai Community College tennis courts starting at 8 a.m. Finals of the two-day tournament will take place Friday at the Kauai Community College tennis courts starting at 8 a.m.
