LIHUE — A man accused of sexually assaulting a minor for seven years did not show up for his scheduled jury trial Monday.
Tarey Low, who is charged with 30 counts of sexual assault, was supposed to go to trial before Judge Kathleen Watanabe Monday, but his attorney, Thomas Otake, filed a motion to continue.
He was not present for the proceedings, and Watanabe issued a bench warrant for his arrest, setting a $25,000 bail.
“Three calls were made at 10:07 a.m.,” Watanabe said.
Low, who lives in Kapaa, is a former Kauai Police Department officer and state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officer. He is said to have allegedly sexually assaulted a female minor from June 29, 2007 through Feb. 14, 2014, according to a 13-page indictment.
Four of the charges are sexual assault in the third degree and the rest of the counts are sexual assault in the first degree.
He started as a DLNR DOCARE officer on April 2, 1990. He became the Kauai district DLNR DOCARE manager in November 2001 and retired on June 1, 2009.
Low served with KPD in the 1980s.
On Monday, Watanabe set a hearing for April 5 to give both attorneys — Otake and Keloa Siu, deputy prosecuting attorney — time to go over a motion for continuance, which was filed Sunday night.
The bench warrant will also be addressed, Watanabe said.
