KAPAA — A group of military personnel recently arrived on Kauai to work on the elevated boardwalk of the Kawaihau Spur, a makai-to-mauka segment of the county’s multi-use path Ke Ala Hele Makalae.
During construction, areas near Kawaihau Road and Kuhio Highway will be closed periodically to ensure the safety of the public, according to a county press release.
Through the county’s agreements with the federal Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training Program and the Federal Highway Administration, rotating teams of military personnel are being flown in to build the elevated boardwalk, while the FHWA is providing the building materials.
“We are pleased to collaborate with the Department of Defense and federal highways on this segment of the multi-use path,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. “The elevated boardwalk will provide access to the coastal path from the Kawaihau area for people of all abilities, and is part of our vision of bringing the path up into the community.”
In June of last year, the first group of military personnel completed the initial phase of construction on the elevated boardwalk, and the current team will pick up where they left off.
The boardwalk is expected to be completed this summer.
The top section of the spur at Gore Park, near St. Catherine School, and the bottom section along Kawaihau Road, were built in 2012.
