LIHUE — Those who are nervous about riding a bicycle on Kauai’s roadways have a chance to take on the streets in a group on Friday during the 2017 Bike To Work Day.
“This is a ride for somebody who is interested (in biking for transit) but intimidated,” said Tommy Noyes, of Kauai Path. “It’s a no-drop ride, which means we’ll all be together.”
Cyclists have two opportunities to take part in the Bike To Work Day — a meet-up in Kapaa and one in Puhi. Both routes end at the Lihue Civic Center.
At 6:54 a.m., a group will be leaving from Puhi Park across Kaumualii Highway from Kauai Community College for a three-mile trip to the civic center.
A group will meet at 6 a.m. Friday at the Kapaa Neighborhood Center for a 9.5-mile trip, using the emergency bypass route and avoiding the stretch of busy highway by the Wailua Golf Course.
“Back there it’s a scabby road, it might be muddy” Noyes said.
In addition to an easy ride with other community members, cyclists will get safety tips for walking, biking and driving in a manner that provides safe transportation.
The literature offers tips like eliminating distractions like texting while driving at operating vehicles slower speeds, as well as wearing reflective materials and bright clothing when walking and biking.
Refreshments will be provided after the rides, which is in celebration of National Bike Month.
No registration is required and cyclists should bring their own gear.
